Army barracks filthy, condemnable places? Duh.
At Ft. Campbell, we lived in buildings fill of mold, asbestos, roaches and worse. Exposed pipes? What, aren’t those normal?
I don’t recall the sewer backing up like they show on the story there. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
And yes, our buildings would have been condemned if they’d been anywhere other than an Army post, too.
At Campbell, though, the infantry had brand new nice barracks. We didn’t. So no one gave a shit.

Cripes, it sounds like my detective division. Of course, the military deserves better.

When I was at FT. Riley I remember having to yell “On the way”! before flushing the toilet lest you ended up scalding one of the guys in the shower. It go pretty nuts when 40 guys were using the head after P.T. Usually someone got stung. The tents we lived in in the field were nicer.

In basic training/AIT at Leonard Wood we had the same exact issue. Right down to the announcement of an impending flush- I think the phrase was “fire in the hole” when warning the poor girls downrange that they were about to be poached.
